How to Choose the Best Coffee for Your French Press
Roast
The roasting of your coffee has a massive impact on the flavor and caffeination, so this is something you’ll want to think about first.
If you prefer sweeter, fruitier flavors, you’ll probably want to stick with light or medium roasts. Additionally, these roasts tend to have more caffeine in them, making them ideal for those who need something to wake them up in the morning.
On the other hand, dark roasts give you a more bitter and smoky profile. This is better for those who aren’t too fond of sweets, and tends to work well with French presses due to its increased oil content.
Not sure which you’d prefer? We’d recommend sticking with a medium-dark roast. It works great with French presses and won’t give you an overwhelmingly bitter taste.
Pre-Ground or Whole Bean
You’ll notice as you look at coffee online or in the store that you can buy it either pre-ground or whole bean. There are reasons to buy it either way, but we’d recommend going for whole bean.
If you buy whole bean coffee, you’ll need to grind it yourself. Although this can be less convenient, it does mean that your coffee is as fresh as possible, especially if you grind it immediately before brewing with it.
Ground coffee is suitable in a pinch or if you don’t yet have your own coffee grinder. Just be aware that it won’t be as fresh as grinding coffee yourself. Should you decide to purchase ground coffee, we’d recommend going for a coarse grind.
Coarse grinds aren’t as likely to pass through the filters in your French press and make your coffee gritty. Furthermore, coarsely ground coffee isn’t prone to overextraction, which is a potential risk in French press brewing.
Amount
Like with any other purchase, you should also consider how much coffee you’ll need. You don’t want your coffee to sit in your kitchen for a long time, otherwise it risks becoming stale.
Look for smaller bags if you don’t think you’ll go through it as quickly or if you’ll be the only one drinking it. On the other hand, multi-pound bags or bundles might be better for you if you’re going to be brewing batches of coffee to share with friends and family more often.

Caffeination
You’ve probably heard the saying, “death before decaf.” Many people have a surprising amount of scorn for decaf coffee.
The truth is, decaf coffee can be useful. What if you want to enjoy the taste of coffee late in the evening without the jitters that can come from caffeine? Or what if caffeine leaves your stomach feeling unsettled?
For those reasons, it’s worth stopping to consider whether you want caffeinated or decaf coffee. All the versions we included on this list are caffeinated simply because it’s easier to find, but there are plenty of decaf Colombian options out there for you if that’s your preference.
Wrap Up
Out of all the options on this list, we’d be most excited to try the Bourbon & Whiskey Barrel Aged Coffee. The idea of coffee beans aged in bourbon and whiskey barrels sounds mouthwatering and intriguing. It’s true that you’ll get more than just pure Colombian coffee in this bundle, but that just means you’ll have more to experience.
