Is Colombian Coffee Strong?

Whether Colombian coffee is strong depends on what your definition of “strong” is in regard to coffee. We think there are two ways to define coffee strength: flavor and caffeine content.

When it comes to flavor, Colombian coffee isn’t going to bowl you over with its strength. It’s not overwhelmingly bitter or acidic, and instead has subtle notes of tart fruit and chocolate. These sweet, lively flavors make it a real crowd pleaser when it comes to coffee.

What about caffeine content? Well, we wouldn’t say Colombian coffee is very strong in that arena. It’s certainly not weak, but you’d need a full eight-ounce cup of it to equal what you’d get from a double shot of espresso.

Is Colombian Coffee High in Caffeine?

In our post about the caffeine level in Colombian coffee, we discussed how you can expect about 200 milligrams of caffeine in an 8-ounce cup. With a little math, you can see that means it has 25 mg of caffeine in a single ounce.

Espresso, on the other hand, has approximately 51 mg of caffeine in a single fluid ounce. This is at the stronger end of the espresso spectrum, of course, as its caffeine level can vary based upon the blend being used.

In other words, Colombian coffee is about half as strong as espresso. It’s not exactly highly caffeinated coffee like this Death Wish Coffee, but it’s far from a cup of decaf. 

Which is Better: Arabica or Colombian Coffee?

If you’re just learning about the world of coffee, you might have heard the terms “Arabica” and “Colombian” being thrown around. Wondering which of these is better?

There’s a misunderstanding that needs to be cleared up here. Coffee beans can largely be divided into two categories: Arabica and Robusta.

Arabica coffee beans are more popular for drip coffee and are grown from a particular type of plant around the world. Colombian coffee beans are actually a type of Arabica beans.

In other words, there isn’t really a comparison to make because Arabica and Colombian coffee are essentially synonymous.

At the end of the day, Colombian coffee isn’t the strongest option out there, especially when it comes to caffeination. If what you want is the largest amount of caffeine, consider grabbing some espresso or highly caffeinated coffee.
