What is Flavored Coffee?
Maybe you're a lover of flavored coffee, or maybe you're just wanting to add some spice to your morning or afternoon brew. Regardless of why you're looking for flavored coffee...
Flavored coffee beans are simply that: coffee beans flavored with both natural and artificial oils or flavorings, specifically to mimic your favorite non-coffee dessert.
You can basically get any coffee flavor. From classics like vanilla to hazelnut, to crazy dessert flavors like red velvet, tiramisu, or creme brulee, the pre-made flavors of coffee are endless these days.
How is Flavored Coffee Made?
Coffee that tastes like something other than coffee... tempting... but how exactly are flavored beans made?
There are a lot of different ways that coffee roasters can make flavored beans. One of the most typical ways of making aroma-heavy beans is to roast the beans, then toss in the flavoring as the coffee finishes roasting. It's usually in the form of syrup, which gives the beans an oily body.
Flavored coffee can be brewed in any way that you choose, but I have found that using a classic french press is an awesome way to make these beans.

Although fair warning, flavored coffee can typically be hard on the stomach, among other things...
Why Flavored Coffee Isn't the Best Coffee
With the tempting options of flavored coffee beans, coffee lovers should be aware of what they are actually getting. Buying flavored coffee beans probably means you are skimping on the quality and freshness of the coffee itself.
Usually, the older beans are bathed in syrup and drenched in different oils to get the beans to taste and smell like your favorite dessert. Not only are they not the best quality, but they usually have a ton of preservatives and artificial ingredients, unfortunately.
The flavors are typically so strong that it masks the taste of older beans, making you think you're still getting a fresh batch of coffee.
A lot of flavored blends are not made with Arabica beans too, which is the best quality beans on the market. Beans like robusta are typically used because coffee companies can mask the coffee taste completely.
You pay more for bad coffee. Lame.

Some coffee drinkers don't mind because of the strong delicious flavor, but I think it should be known that quality typically lacks when drinking flavored brews.
Finding a coffee company that makes flavored coffee with real ingredients and fresh beans is difficult, but not impossible.
A few things you should avoid adding to coffee:
To get a deliciously tasty flavored brew, you can always try flavored syrups! And generally for simple flavors like Vanilla or Hazelnut, that's totally what you should use vs. a pre-made flavored coffee.
Try Flavored Coffee Syrups
You don't want to skimp on quality and freshness, right? Or maybe you want to have some control with how much flavor is in your coffee. Trust me, I get it.
This is where flavored coffee syrups come in! These syrups will make you feel like a professional barista in your own home.
You know how you order that vanilla latte at your local coffee house? You just ordered a quality espresso with delicious coffee syrup (for probably an extra $1). Give another pump to your brew, or maybe you want to mix it up: the great thing about coffee syrups is the control you get with your flavor!
If you're trying to watch the calories, you can even get sugarless syrups.
Amazing.
Like flavored beans, the options that you have for coffee syrups are endless. I've included a couple of really great coffee syrups in my list of favorite flavored coffee below, if you want to go that route!
You can also try coffee creamers to add flavor to your favorite coffee. Click here to see my favorite dairy alternative coffee creamers.
